CCTV
in Police Stations
To maintain the
highest professional standards and to
ensure transparency in work
to make a corruption free force, CCTV cameras have been installed
in all police stations of
Chandigarh
since April, 2007. 5/6 cameras covering entrance of
Police Station, Duty Officer’s room, Male and Female lock-up, Record
room , Corridors and SHO’s room,
have been installed in each police station. For better monitoring of
police functioning at police station level these CCTV Cameras have further been
connected with the computers of Senior Officers at Police Headquarters through
2Mbps managed lease line network. Senior Officer’s
as well as the Police Control Room are monitoring
real time working of any police station at any time with just a click of
mouse. The system is having a storage capacity of about 20 days, which is useful
to monitor the facility, recover any evidence and long term information for the
department in various Court Cases/ Enquiries.
Since the
installation of CCTV system, Chandigarh Police has been able to enquire into the
complaints of torture, illegal detention etc. and bring out true facts by
reviewing the CCTV recordings and establish the innocence or otherwise of the
police personnel. The complaints of illegal detention and torture by
Chandigarh
police have substantially declined since then. The introduction of CCTV system
in police stations has been a major success because now the public feel more
safe while visiting the police station.
The CCTV system would
be quite useful for large and medium cities as this will improve the image of
police and bring transparency in the working of police.
